Shallow ND essentially opened the door to the possibilities of heavy music—that it could be made in our own community and by people of our age. Simply put, there was before and after Shallow. It was a seismic shift. They were also that perfect mix of encouraging and intimidating. Tony, Dan, and Biff helped lift our bands up, while still establishing themselves as the benchmark. You were inspired, but never comfortable.
More individually, Tony was an early blueprint for Victor’s drumming and remains one of his favourite drummers ever. The power, the economy, the shiftiness, the vocal approach behind the kit—it was and still is a huge influence. And though they’re kind of ubiquitous in the noise/heavy scene now, Dan’s usage of a Telecaster completely changed what John thought was possible with that particular guitar. It went from being a twangy, polite indie device to an instrument of chaos and death. It’s been his go-to ever since.
