I first discovered Shallow North Dakota in my formative years, either in my late teens or early twenties. I used to frequent the Aquarius Records website (a now defunct, but very cool record shop in San Francisco, CA), and though I had never shopped there in “real life”, I trusted the staff’s taste as they would frequently write great, thoughtful reviews on all types of records. I blind-bought “Mob Wheel” because of their review, and the great, foreboding artwork. With no photos of the band in the artwork or liner notes, they were enigmatic to me. All I knew was the dark, foreboding artwork coupled with the insane-looking lyric scrawl that permeated the unfolded inner sleeve of the LP. I threw on the record, and was assaulted by a sludgy barrage of mechanical rhythm and noise, like someone drove a tractor down a flight of stairs while playing a bass guitar. I was instantly enthralled. The music was primal, unrelenting, and all-encompassing. It’s the kind of record that forces you to become an active listener. Glued to my seat, I let it wash over me. That’s the kind of album experience I chase, and attempt to create with my music now.
